Everything you need to know about the Hoof Boss
The Hoof Boss is a power tool designed to assist in the removal of hoof material. It can quickly trim the hoof wall, sole, and heel. The Hoof Boss is so precise that you can remove hoof slivers as thin as an eggshell, giving you complete control over how much hoof you remove.
Yes! With proven results for a stronger, cleaner and smoother hoof, the Hoof Boss will not only give you a smooth-to-the-touch finish, but it will also trim overgrown hooves and resolve abnormal hoof issues. This means there is nowhere for dirt, muck or bacteria to get caught, making infection less likely.
The Hoof Boss will significantly reduce your trimming time. While there is a short learning curve, most experienced trimmers can trim four hooves in five to nine minutes.
Move the safety tab forward with your thumb or forefingers, then press the paddle down while keeping a firm grip. The tool will feel balanced in your hand. Make sure not to cover the air vents or locking button when trimming.
Not at all. The Hoof Boss is specifically designed to be small and light, but also powerful. You only need to apply minimal pressure, which takes the strain off your hands, wrists, and arms.
The best way to practice is with a piece of Cedar or Redwood. These hardwoods have roughly the same density as an animal's hoof.
Yes. The Hoof Boss pulls one amp / 100 watts of power and can be operated with an inverter plugged into your vehicle's 12-volt power outlet.
Yes. The paddle switch model is available in 110V (North America, Japan) and 220-240V (Europe, UK, Australia). The tool is CE compliant for EU markets.
The 220V model comes with three plug options: Type C (European), Type I (Australian/NZ), and Type G (UK).
It produces the same noise level as electric clippers or shears (under 100 decibels). Most animals acclimate to the sound after a couple of uses.
Yes. Keep them clean and free of debris using a wire brush and gentle solvent, or lightly burn off material with a blowtorch. You do NOT need to sharpen them. Replace after every 100-500 animals or when the grit loses aggressiveness.
Yes. It includes a safety guard for hand and finger protection and a paddle switch to prevent accidental starting. We have never had a chain break, disc crack, or tooth come loose.
Always wear gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask. Use a grounded outlet or GFI extension cord. Wear heavy-duty work gloves, long pants or chaps, and closed-toed shoes. Use a stand or flip chute when trimming.
No. While there is a short learning curve on holding and using the tool, you will not need to learn a new technique. The 4-tooth chain disc uses a pulling motion similar to a hoof knife.
The electric model comes with an 8-foot cord and needs to be plugged into a grounded outlet, AC/DC adapter, or generator. The Mobile model runs on a 20V DeWalt battery (sold separately).
The safety guard comes pre-positioned. We recommend adjusting it between 23 and 90 degrees for the safest and most comfortable grip.
No. Boss Tools will not warranty the tool if you remove the safety guard. It protects your fingers and hands and must remain on at all times.
It depends on the condition. Harder frogs can be trimmed safely, but softer frogs are better handled with a traditional hoof knife.
The Hoof Boss is a one-handed operation, so a hoof stand leaves your other hand free for balance and support. Less stress on your body, especially your back.
Start by letting the animal see and smell the tool. Turn it on nearby. Let them feel the vibration through your hand. Then touch the tool to the hoof. Stop at any point if the animal is uncomfortable.
Yes, although we recommend making sure everything is properly grounded.
Keep yourself between the power supply and the animal. This makes it safer and easier to trim without cord hazards.
No. The patented disc designs generate minimal heat — nothing detrimental to the hoof or painful to the animal.
Use the diamond-coated file included with your set. The tungsten carbide teeth are too hard for a standard file. The chains do not require any other maintenance.
We recommend sharpening after every 25 animals. Replace the chain every 500-1,000 animals depending on use and maintenance.
Yes. Chains are easy to replace without sending the disc back to us. We recommend keeping a spare on hand.
Absolutely. From a goat to a giraffe, you can use this tool on any hooved animal.
The 4-tooth and 6-tooth chain discs are carbon steel coated with tungsten carbide. The 8-tooth chain disc is carbon steel.
Gold: Fine Grit (least aggressive). Blue: Medium Grit. Silver: Coarse Grit (most aggressive).
All abrasive discs are made from tungsten carbide.
All discs attach to the Hoof Boss except the Herd Boss, which attaches to a 4.5-inch angle grinder.
The Hoof Boss uses a gentle cutting and grinding motion that gives you full control of the depth of cut, resulting in a smooth, even trim.
The tool is designed for right-hand use as the disc turns counter-clockwise. Left-handed users can still use it but may need to use their right hand at times.
