HEY! WHAT GIVES? THE BATTERY IS NOT ON THE TOOL.
When we first started to develop a battery option for the Hoof Boss, we considered ways to attach the battery directly. We looked at various configurations and battery types but no matter what we tried, it compromised the stability of the Hoof Boss tool.
It threw off the balance of the Hoof Boss, was bulky, not easy to control in tight spaces and it was too heavy. One of the best qualities of the Hoof Boss is its lightweight.
Realizing that a battery attached to the tool would not work, we decided to create a system that uses an easily accessible battery.
BIRTH OF THE BATTERY HOLSTER
We designed a lightweight holster for a rechargeable battery commonly used for power tools. The holster is connected to the Hoof Boss using a specially designed “center coiled” power cord. This unique feature keeps the cord tout between the battery and the tool and out of the way when in use. The holster can be worn on your belt, your apron or attached to your toolbox.
THE BATTERY
The Hoof Boss Mobile holster accepts a Dewalt brand 18V or 20V rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery or a compatible replacement. The battery is not included with the trimming set.
We decided not to provide our own battery; instead, we elected to use a well-recognized name brand battery that the customer would provide. By providing your own battery it gives you a variety of sizing options, easy to find at any home improvement center and much less expensive than buying them from Boss Tools. There is also a strong likelihood that you already own a Dewalt brand battery. If not, when buy your battery it’s not exclusive to the Hoof Boss. You can use the battery for other things.
There are two considerations when choosing the battery. The size of the battery in amp hours (Ah) and the weight of the battery. A 5Ah battery will power the tool for a longer period than a 1.5Ah battery but the 5Ah battery will be more expensive and noticeably heavier.

CASE STUDY / BATTERY LIFE
Lee McMillian, Farrier for 35 years, has used the Hoof Boss for 4 years and was the first to test the Mobile version. Lee trims an average of 70+/- horses a week. When Lee first tested the Hoof Boss Mobile, we used a 5Ah Dewalt battery. The battery life was excellent as it lasted about 4 days before needing to be re-charged. The downside was the weight of the battery made it uncomfortable to wear.
We changed to a 1.5Ah battery, lighter weight but requires frequent re-charging. It’s important to note that the condition of the horse hooves during this test were dry and extremely hard. No measurable amounts of rain for months. Under these conditions, we find the 1.5Ah battery will last for about 4+/- horses / 16 hooves. Lee carries multiple batteries and a charger in his truck. Lee likes the lighter weight. He said, “having to stop and replace the battery every few horses gives me a nice little break”. Lee bases his decision on when to change the battery on how the tool is performing. When Lee notices that the tool is beginning to slow down, he will change the battery.
FASTER MOTOR
Because the motor is more powerful, it runs 25% faster! This in turn makes the trimming disc rotate 25% faster. Our group of field associates reported that with the new faster motor the task of trimming has become noticeably faster and easier to complete. They also mentioned that the new motor provided a much smoother trimming experience.
HOOF-BOSS-MOBILE
We have finally eliminated that pesky, always in the way, hold down button. With the button gone, the trimming discs are now changed out using a specially designed Attachment Wrench included in all sets.
EASILY ACCESSIBLE
The Hoof Boss Mobile has been designed to attach to your belt, your toolbox or your apron or any other place you can think to attach it to.
